About the Show

A podcast featuring casual conversation around a virtual fireside about Faith, the Earth, the Universe, and Everything. Bristlecone Firesides explores foundational themes of a spiritual practice rooted in the Earth and strives to re-enchant the natural world with an ecologically-based spirituality that is centered in sacred texts, rooted in the Earth, and lived through activist issues relevant today.

What is Bristlecone Firesides?

The mission of Bristlecone Firesides is to provide a place for Latter-day Saints, Mormons, or any member of the spiritual Body of Christ to discuss the intersection between their faith, spirituality, and the Earth. Season one is focused on laying foundational themes of an environmentally-based spirituality. Podcast guests make their camps widely across the Mormon and non-Mormon spectrum, and as such their voices will reflect the dazzling diversity of our spiritual community.

Here, in the shadow of the Bristlecone Pine—the eternal tree—we build our fireside. The dancing light of our fire will warm the heart as we tell our stories to re-enchant the world around us. As the sun sets on the industry of extreme consumption and thoughtless waste, we must be the sunrise on a day of restoration and grounded living.

Who will like Bristlecone Firesides?

Bristlecone Firesides feels like a conversation around a campfire with close friends. And each conversation is a practice in re-grounding a life of faith and belief in the stuff of the Earth. This podcast is for people who feel as though their faith is detached from the issues they care about and who want to make their faith relevant to their lived experience. Bristlecone Firesides is an effort to expand the circle of belonging to include the Earth, animals, plants, and each other. So if you care about Climate Change, wilderness preservation, backpacking, hiking, camping, surfing, picnics, or just simple s’mores by the fire, this is the podcast for you.

The Hosts

Abigail Pinegar was born and raised mostly in Utah, with a few formative years spent in the Pacific Northwest. These different landscapes were instrumental in fostering a desire and passion to study and protect critical nature. Her love for the outdoors coerced her into completing a B.A. in Environmental Humanities at Brigham Young University. She currently works full-time for a natural foods company, while simultaneously pursuing an M.A. in Comparative Studies (with an environmental focus, of course!) at Brigham Young University. She hopes to eventually utilize her fervor for the arts and the earth to incite better environmental practices and greater appreciation for God’s creations.

Madison is a Utah native through and through. He loves dirty feet, hugging trees, and gardening. After spending a childhood obsessed with the bug in the window and discovering where to dig up dinosaurs, Madison formalized his earthy passions with a degree in Environmental Humanities from Brigham Young University. With the sea turtle as his inner animal, Madison enjoys taking life slowly and with purpose. In his downtime, Madison really digs being an uncle, spending time in the kitchen, hiking, camping, and of course, seeing as many movies as possible. As an aspiring Taoist Mormon Mystic, he will someday get around to meditating with seriousness.

Future Seasons

Abbey and Madison have planned out many seasons of Bristlecone Firesides. Each will be roughly 10-12 episodes in length and will focus on a particular Earthy theme. Season one is focused on foundational ideas and themes. Season two is already in development.
